I’m what a call a “type-B” hiker: meaning my bag has just enough where you can tell I was thoughtful, but you can tell I didn’t empty my bank account at REI.
If you’re like me and looking to strike that balance between being prepared with materials to set your mind at ease for what may come your way on the trail and not feeling weighed down by unnecessary items, look no further. Below is the list of staples that have found a permanent home in my day-hiking pack.
Items for your Day Hike Pack:
- First Aid Kit (can buy one already put together on Amazon/CVS or make your own!)
- band aids
- bacitracin
- medical tape
- Advil
- allergy medication
- Tissues
- Plastic baggies (these are good for trash accumulated)
- Overall Health Support Pack
- Theraflu
- tampons + panty liners
- stomach upset relief
- Purell hand sanitizer
- Hair elastics
- Portable rechargeable battery pack
- Flashlight
- Pen
- Sunscreen
- Body/face wipes
- Charging cable/block
- Lighter
- Gum
- Hat
- Sunglasses
When I’m traveling, I also use my hiking pack as my carry-on, so there are a few other items that don’t have a permanent home that would be useful for you to carry. Depending on where you’re hiking, bear spray or bells to put on your bag to deter wildlife are a good idea! Consider carrying a small utility knife. A form of identification such as a driver’s license is the last thing I’d recommend shoving in a side pocket before hitting the trail.
As always – make sure you do your research for weather hazards you may need to prepare for and check with the ranger station for any additional info on the area!
